Alpha pool's fate will be on the ballot. Again.

The facility has been closed since 2006.

It's not the first time the fate of Alpha's pool will go to voters. But it may be the last.

The second referendum in three years regarding the long-closed John Dolak Memorial Pool will appear on November's general election ballot. Borough staff said it is technically a non-binding measure, meaning the council does not have to act on the result.

But Mayor Craig Dunwell said it should be the decider in the ongoing debate.

"If the voters want the pool reopened, we will reopen it. If they want it demolished, we will demolish it," Dunwell said this week.

The pool has been closed since 2006. Since then, efforts to save it have been debated through borough council votes, petitions and a 2013 referendum in which 321 voters supported using open space funds to repair and reopen the pool, and 266 opposed.

What does it take to restore a pool?

The pool narrowly avoided destruction in a 2015 council vote. One councilman abstained in a vote to approve a demolition contract, leaving the measure one vote short of the four required.

The question on November's ballot will read:

"With the Borough having recently achieved all of its open space and farmland acquisition goals, do you favor redirecting 100% of the available balance of the Municipal Open Space, Recreation, and Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust Fund monies to recreation activities within the Borough, including refurbishing, reopening, and operating the John Dolak Memorial Pool, now and in the future?"

The general election is Nov. 8. The deadline to register to vote in New Jersey is Oct. 18. You can check your registration and find your polling place on the state department's election division website, www.njelections.org.
