The residents and their pets got out safely in the fire that broke out before 4 a.m.
A home was heavily damaged in a fire early Tuesday morning in Phillipsburg, but the residents and their pets got out safely.
Flames were reportedly showing as authorities arrived following a 3:41 a.m. dispatch to 309 Firth St., which is across from a town fire station.
One firefighter was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Phillipsburg, an emergency radio report indicated.
Well after the firefighting effort began, smoke was still pouring from a third-floor window, although the owner said he thought the fire started in a basement electrical panel.
Two cats and a dog as well as the owner and his wife got out safely. It wasn't immediately clear how many of their children were home, but everyone was accounted for, the family said.
The residents were displaced and the American Red Cross was called to assist.
The wife said she smelled smoke and then heard the smoke alarms.
Phillipsburg fire Chief Rich Hay said he will provide more information when he can.
