UPDATE: No one hurt, but 4 displaced after Phillipsburg fire

Flames tore through the second floor of a home Thursday morning in Phillipsburg.

Town firefighters battled the blaze at 60 Lewis St. Flames were visible about 9 a.m. coming from a rear window.

No one was injured, town fire Chief Richard Hay said. The home is repairable but not currently livable, he said. The tenants have found another place to stay, he said.

One of the tenants declined to comment other than to say he wasn't hurt. The American Red Cross was alerted, Hay said.

A fire marshal was summoned and Hay did not immediately speculate about what may have caused the blaze.

The fire was quickly contained. It was under control in about 15 minutes.

At 9:30, firefighters worked in a room at the rear of the second floor and peeled back the edge of the roof looking for hot spots. Windows had been pulled out. Just below where the fire raged, a deck with a propane grill was not damaged.

The front windows of the home were broken out on the second floor and a ventilation hole was cut into the roof. A cinder-block chimney runs up the side of the single-family home.

It was initially reported as a smoke investigation at 8:45 a.m. at Hudson and Lewis streets, according to the Warren County Department of Public Safety.

More information will be released later in the day, Hay said.
