Retiring Phillipsburg Superintendent George Chando has filed papers to run for the Easton Area School Board.
The highest-ranking Phillipsburg Stateliner is looking for a leadership position in his rival school district.
Retiring Phillipsburg School District Superintendent George Chando filed his candidacy papers to run for Easton Area School Board. He seeks a seat in Region III, which includes Forks Township, Martins Creek and part of Easton.
How could someone with 42 years of experience working in the Phillipsburg district consort with the enemy?
Actually, he's been an Easton Area School District resident since 1979. And his children were (gasp!) Easton Area School District graduates.
"My philosophy has always been to volunteer my time wherever I could be of any assistance," he said Friday.
Chando's retirement becomes effective when his contract expires June 30.
He said his experience with curriculum and school budgets could come in handy while serving on the Easton Area School Board. And his experience overseeing the construction of the new high school could prove valuable as the Easton Area district embarks on rebuilding Cheston and Palmer elementary schools.
"That's why I chose to run when I retired form my current position," Chando said.
Candidates have until Tuesday to collect enough signatures to get on the primary election ballot.

So far Chando, of Forks Township, and Meg Sayago of the College Hill section of Easton have filed to run for a seat in Region III.
Former school board member Brian Snyder has filed papers to run in Region I, which covers Palmer Township and a small portion of Easton.
Matt Monahon resigned his seat in Region III on Feb. 21 because he's moving out of the area. Candidates have until March 16 to apply to fill his vacancy.
So far only Sayago has applied for that spot, according to Easton Area School District Superintendent John Reinhart.
Here are the incumbent candidates up for re-election.
- Region I: Baron Vanderburg
- Region II: Michelle Price, Robert Obey
- Region III: Dominick Buscemi, vacancy left by Monahon.
Region II includes most of Easton.
