Steven W. Newman, of Phillipsburg, was arrested Friday and sent to jail in Somerset County to await his first appearance in court, Hunterdon County Prosecutor  Anthony P. Kearns III said in a news release Saturday.

Newman is charged with aggravated sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child and lewdness. The assault charge is the most serious, and could result in a sentence of up to 20 years in prison if Newman is convicted.

The victim was less than 13 years old and the crimes occurred in Flemington, the prosecutor said.

"The guardians of children must always remain vigilant to the fact that those who sexually exploit children could be a trusted friend or family member," Kearns said. "Continual communication with children under your care is imperative to keeping them safe and children should be taught about appropriate boundaries."

Anyone with information that could aid the ongoing investigation is asked to contact the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office Special Victims Unit at 908-788-1129.
