The reported attack remains under investigation, police said.

Pohatcong Township police say they are investigating the 57-year-old male homeowner's account of being attacked by a black bear Wednesday morning in the 300 block of Route 627.

The man told police he was feeding his pets when a black bear, estimated to be between 450 to 500 pounds, ran over about 9:30 a.m. and began swatting at him.

Pohatcong Township police on Wednesday afternoon posted an update on its Facebook page indicating the reported attack is yet to be confirmed. The update, which went live shortly after 2 p.m., came about four hours after the department and township mayor initially warned residents about the reported attack.

Mayor James Kern III said police are continuing to investigate, but wouldn't elaborate. He released a statement on Facebook, praising he work of emergency workers, representatives of the DEP's Division of Fish and Wildlife and law enforcement.

"Our department will continue their investigation of the reported bear attack," he said. "I commend the police, medical and wildlife professionals for their work on this incident today. We hope to have this matter finalized in the next day."

A New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection spokesman confirmed the DEP's Division of Fish and Wildlife was at the property, but referred questions about the investigation to police.

The man suffered cuts to his arms and hands and was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Phillipsburg, but injuries did not appear to be life threatening, Kern had said.

Kern said the man also told police he was familiar with the bear, but it never approached him in the past.

Nobody was home when a reporter visited the property Wednesday.
