Intersections will be made more accessible to people with disabilities.
Phillipsburg should soon be more accessible to pedestrians with disabilities.
The state is granting the town $290,000 to improve sidewalks and make them compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act, the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs recently announced.
The grant will help new construction meet the requirements and repair sidewalk accesses that were not properly installed, Mayor Stephen Ellis said.
"The town of Phillipsburg has gotten way behind ... as construction of new sidewalks where done without the ADA engineering," Ellis said in an email. "Every dollar counts in our town. We have a long way to go."

The grant is part of a larger program distributing nearly $6.3 million to 18 municipalities around the state for projects that will benefit populations in need, the community affairs department said.
Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
